Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, are set to return to the United Kingdom for an extended stay beginning this fall. Despite their return, the couple will not resume their duties as working royals. Their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, are already enrolled in British schools, with classes starting in September.

The family plans to live in a private residence outside of London while maintaining their homes in Montecito, California, and Portugal. The decision for the extended stay was confirmed by a person close to the Sussexes, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Harry and Meghan previously stepped back from royal duties and relocated to California over six years ago. They have since established successful careers with Netflix and Spotify. Relations with the royal family have been strained, yet Harry has shown interest in reconciliation to spend more time with his father, King Charles III, who is dealing with health issues.

Buckingham Palace remains silent on the couple’s plans. Meanwhile, representatives for Harry and Meghan have declined to comment. Within the UK, Meghan will continue managing her company, As Ever, while Harry focuses on his charitable work.

The couple’s move to California was partly driven by seeking freedom from royal constraints. This period also saw public criticism of the palace regarding its handling of issues impacting Meghan’s mental health and rumored racist remarks made during her first pregnancy. Meghan identifies as biracial.

Harry continues to face legal battles, including a prominent case against British tabloids accusing them of phone hacking. Recent legal proceedings resulted in him being potentially liable for millions in legal costs after unsuccessful lawsuits.

Security concerns have also been a contentious issue. Harry’s request for police protection in the UK was denied, leading to legal challenges. Despite losing the court battle, Harry expressed his desire to mend family relationships, emphasizing the wish for reconciliation, particularly with his father.

During recent charity work in the UK, Harry spent time with King Charles and introduced him to Archie and Lilibet for the first time since 2022. However, Harry’s relationship with his brother, Prince William, remains strained. Royal correspondent Peter Hunt suggests that Harry’s return could facilitate improved relations with his father, though challenges with William persist.
