A Chinese citizen residing in Massachusetts, Yupeng Sun, age 33, was apprehended by federal authorities after allegedly posing as another Chinese native to register and cast votes in the 2024 presidential election. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts charged Sun with fraudulent voter registration and voting.
According to the criminal complaint, Sun confessed to registering the victim to vote and using the victim’s identity to cast a ballot. He reportedly stated to investigators, “I tell you the truth, I register,” when confronted with the victim’s voter registration details.
An anonymous tip alleged that a Massachusetts permanent resident voted illegally in the 2024 presidential election, providing a snapshot of the victim’s voter status.
Investigators presented Sun with a photo of the early voting ballot envelope submitted at Malden City Hall on October 31, 2024. Sun allegedly admitted, “I used his name to vote.” Documentation indicated the ballot cast in the victim’s name was accepted for the 2024 election.
Sun, who once rented a room from the family in Malden, is accused of impersonating both the victim and his wife on immigration forms, seeking their legal status revocation. The family’s green cards were seized upon their return from overseas in June 2024, initiating deportation proceedings. Their status was reinstated by an immigration judge in January 2026, backed by forensic examination confirming the forms were unsigned by them.
The early voting ballot envelope carried the alleged victim’s name and was filed at Malden City Hall on October 31, 2024.
Federal officials claim Sun subsequently sent anonymous tips to Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, accusing the victim of illegal voting in 2024. Sun reportedly admitted sending these tips during interviews with authorities.
Sun entered the U.S. in September 2020 on a B-2 visa, which expired in March 2021. He has deferred action status from a U-Visa application submitted in February 2022.
Under new directives, DHS commands ICE to deport illegal immigrants found voting in U.S. elections.
Voter fraud charges entail a maximum of five years imprisonment, three years supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. Sun might also face deportation post-sentence.
U.S. Attorney Leah Foley and Jeff Grimming, acting special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in New England, revealed the charges. Local police assisted in the investigation. Accusations remain under court examination; Sun is considered innocent until proven guilty.
