Rainn Wilson and Jenna Fischer Discuss the Impact of Modern Culture on Comedy and Career Choices

Rainn Wilson, known for his role in ‘The Office,’ believes the sitcom could not be made today due to cancel culture and political division. He feels these factors inhibit modern comedies from flourishing. Wilson expresses frustration with what he perceives as double standards and increasing political division.

Jenna Fischer, who portrayed Pam Beesly on ‘The Office,’ shared her experience post-show. After the series ended in 2013, she appeared in ABC’s ‘Splitting Up Together’ in 2018. Despite enjoying the cast, Fischer found the intense workload challenging as a mother of two.

The hours were intense, around 65 to 70 per week. It was difficult with my young kids.

Fischer eventually reconsidered her career. She decided that leading or regularly appearing on a TV show wasn’t suitable for her anymore. After ‘Splitting Up Together’ was canceled, Fischer collaborated with Angela Kinsey, her ‘The Office’ co-star. They launched ‘Office Ladies,’ a podcast revisiting the NBC sitcom episodes.

Fischer found podcasting provided benefits TV could not, such as control over her schedule. It offered a steady income and allowed her to be involved in her children’s activities.

I was at every school event and didn’t have to seek permission for personal commitments.

This shift in focus became crucial when Fischer was diagnosed with Stage 1 triple-positive breast cancer in December 2023. Her diagnosis came after an inconclusive mammogram, leading to further tests. She underwent a lumpectomy, chemotherapy, and radiation.

Fischer announced being cancer-free in 2024, emphasizing the importance of early detection. Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey’s ‘Office Ladies’ podcast debuted in 2019, allowing Fischer more personal time while maintaining her career.
