King Charles Faces Criticism Over Religious Stance

King Charles III has come under scrutiny by Gavin Ashenden, a former chaplain to Queen Elizabeth, who accused him of turning away from Christians and not upholding his oath as ‘Defender of the Faith.’ This followed a change in the Sovereign Grant Annual Report, replacing ‘Defender of the Faith’ with ‘His Majesty is Supreme Governor of the Church of England and protects the space for Faith within the multi-faith nation.’

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams commented that this new wording has sparked significant debate. He suggested it would be better to keep the phrase ‘Defender of the Faith’ while acknowledging Britain’s multi-faith composition. He criticized the phrase ‘protects the space for Faith within the multi-faith nation’ as ineffectively crafted.

Christopher Andersen, who authored the biography ‘Kate!’, remarked that King Charles has always shown an interest in various religions. He highlighted Charles’s fascination with eastern religions since his student years at Cambridge, notably Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism.

Although Queen Elizabeth respected different religious practices, she remained steadfast in her Christian beliefs. Andersen noted Charles’s belief that no single religion holds all the answers. To include non-Christians, he aims to create a more inclusive reign.

The next generation of royals, according to Andersen, seems uncertain about the ‘Defender of the Faith’ title. A significant moment illustrating this was when Prince William, during his enrollment at Eton College, questioned what to put under ‘Religion,’ suggesting a potential shift away from the role.

Ian Pelham Turner, a royal broadcaster, described Charles as a deep thinker on religion, pointing out that William shows little interest in the church, whereas Catherine has renewed her Christian beliefs following her cancer diagnosis.

Fitzwilliams emphasized the importance of maintaining the Church of England’s strength, noting that Queen Elizabeth likened it to an umbrella, fostering other faiths’ growth. He warned against weakening the Church further, given its significance to the monarchy.
