The Arizona Cardinals are in a rebuilding phase, with a new head coach and a promising selection of draft picks. However, their plans have been disrupted as injuries plague their top rookies. Weeks into training camp, issues arise with their first four picks all injured.
Injury Struggles
Arizona’s first-round pick is sidelined with an injury, while the second-round pick is out for the entire season. The third-round pick is also injured, and the fourth-round selection faces a season-long absence. Out of seven draft selections, most are battling injuries, putting the Cardinals in a difficult position.
Running back Jeremiyah Love, the third player picked in the first round, is affected by an ankle injury, keeping him out indefinitely. His absence from the remainder of the preseason raises concerns about his availability for the season start. Head coach Mike LaFleur confirmed that guard Chase Bisontis, the second-round pick, is out for the entire season due to an MCL injury. Bisontis needs surgery after getting injured in a preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
“He will be out for a good amount of time, if not the whole year,” LaFleur said. “Sucks for him. Always think about the player first. Sucks for the Cardinals too, He’s a good player but more importantly you hate it for the player.”
Quarterback Concerns
Quarterback Carson Beck, a third-round pick, had a promising preseason debut, completing 15 of 19 passes with a touchdown. Despite this performance, Beck is now sidelined due to a rib injury sustained in the Hall of Fame game. He missed practice and the following game against the Raiders, with no clear diagnosis provided by the coach.
“Soreness” is the reported status, leaving Beck’s participation in upcoming practices and games uncertain.
Additional Setbacks
Fourth-round pick Kaleb Proctor, injured during Organized Team Activities in June, also headed to the Injured Reserve with a torn meniscus, requiring surgery.
Encouragingly, Love and Beck might return later. Dr. David Chao, a medical expert, termed Love’s injury as a “mild high ankle sprain,” hopeful for a Week 1 return but advising caution against early comebacks.
The situation is not typical. The Cardinals are alone in managing injuries to more than half their draft class, creating speculation of bad luck or a “curse.”
