Democratic anxiety is growing in the Michigan Senate race as Republican Mike Rogers leads Abdul El-Sayed, according to a new Fox News poll. In response, Michigan Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens has urged El-Sayed to focus on Michigan voters, particularly after his ties with controversial streamer Hasan Piker. Stevens, while backing El-Sayed, maintains her criticism of Piker, emphasizing the need for El-Sayed to connect with local voters.
During “The Sunday Briefing,” Stevens stressed the importance of severing ties with Piker and spotlighted Democratic strategies on healthcare, democracy, and supporting Black-owned businesses. These platforms, she argues, present a stronger option compared to Rogers in the Senate race.
“It certainly makes sense to get rid of this Hasan Piker affiliation,” Stevens stated, pointing to the advantages of Democratic plans.
Addressing whether El-Sayed has made efforts to win support from groups that backed her, such as Jewish, Black, and Reagan-era Democrat voters, Stevens highlighted her success with these demographics. She identifies as a Zionist Democrat and believes there is space for all communities within the party.
The contest is critical for Democrats as they aim to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters. Stevens, who came close to winning the primary, remains supportive of the Democratic values and desires inclusivity within the party.
A recent Fox News poll reveals El-Sayed trailing Rogers by four points, underperforming with Black voters, women, and suburban voters. The general election is set for Nov. 3, where Rogers and El-Sayed will compete in the swing state.
