The Chicago Cubs faced significant changes to their 26-man roster during Sunday’s finale against the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field. Dansby Swanson exited the game due to left-side tightness after his initial swing, deepening their concerns after an 11-4 defeat. The shortstop’s condition may necessitate a move to the injured list, according to manager Craig Counsell.
Swanson commented, “We don’t really know anything yet.” He explained that further information would come after diagnostic imaging. Rookie James Triantos took over at second base, with Nico Hoerner transitioning to shortstop. In Swanson’s absence, Hoerner will continue at short, while rookie Pedro Ramírez is likely to play second base. Ramírez made his major-league debut at first base on Sunday, in place of Michael Busch. The Cubs lack a backup first baseman after recent trades and need a reliable option in case of another injury like Swanson’s.
Manager Craig Counsell stated before the game, “First base is a spot where we’re a little concerned about what’s next should something happen to Michael.” Cabrera’s return signified another roster adjustment. The Cubs activated right-hander Edward Cabrera from the injured list, fitting him back into the rotation. Acquired from the Miami Marlins, his reactivation led to Javier Assad’s reassignment to Iowa. Assad has been a versatile pitcher with a 1.88 ERA since July, making both starts and relief appearances.
The team opted for Assad’s move due to his minor-league options despite Counsell’s acknowledgment of the difficulty in the decision. Counsell said they wanted to maintain depth while moving forward. Cabrera, expected to struggle initially upon his return, did not meet expectations. He allowed seven earned runs, raising his ERA to 5.68.
Cabrera attributed his performance issues to a blister on his right middle finger, a recurring problem since late May. Despite feeling the blister forming early, Cabrera attempted to manage through it without consulting Counsell or pitching coach Tommy Hottovy. The blister impaired his command, leading to multiple walks and a three-run frame in the fourth inning.
“That was what affected me there in the last inning,” Cabrera acknowledged, expressing disappointment at not completing the inning. Counsell remarked that Cabrera’s rotation spot is now uncertain given his persistent control problems. With several pitchers ready as alternatives, Cabrera’s role remains undefined.
Cubs’ left-hander David Peterson becomes a temporary bullpen option. Peterson, a June trade acquisition from the New York Mets, maintained a 4.19 ERA in eight starts. The Cubs anticipated initial difficulties for Cabrera, but his ongoing command challenges and frequent walks cast doubt on his starting role. Counsell mentioned the need for discussions on Cabrera’s future starts.
Although Cabrera acknowledged the blister’s impact, he downplayed its severity regarding time off. “It’s a blister. I have had those in the past. In my mind, I’m not going to miss a start over a blister.” The Cubs continue to weigh their starting options with Cabbrera’s situation in mind.
