Police Arrest 15 in Street Takeover on Long Island

Fifteen individuals faced arrest and seven vehicles were seized following a police intervention at an alleged street takeover in Long Island on Saturday. The Suffolk County Police Department’s Street Takeover Task Force, utilizing intelligence and social media monitoring, received early notice of the event planned for Friday night, August 14.

Authorities tracked the group as they moved across several locations during the night within Suffolk County, an area spanning about 1,000 square miles in eastern Long Island. Officers intervened in attempted gatherings near Commack Road and Sunrise Highway in Islip and later disrupted another near Route 112 and Main Street in Patchogue.

Numerous vehicles effectively shut down the roadway on Sawgrass Drive by driving recklessly.

Eventually, police intercepted the crowd around 12:50 a.m. on Saturday near Woodside Avenue and Sawgrass Drive in Medford. Vehicles had effectively blocked the road by performing stunts, including donuts and burnouts, according to authorities.

Members of the task force arrested 15 people, impounded seven vehicles, and issued multiple traffic citations. Those arrested hailed from various Long Island communities and New York City. Fourteen out of the 15 suspects faced charges of participating in and spectating an unlawful speed contest.

This action follows a similar incident weeks prior where a large street takeover in Suffolk County resulted in three arrests and the impounding of 10 vehicles. Around 200 ATVs, dirt bikes, and motorcycles overwhelmed roads in Hauppauge and Brentwood, necessitating another major police response.
