Two distinct dinosaur-themed films made their presence felt at the North American box office over the weekend. Despite this, neither managed to dethrone “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which continues its stronghold on the charts.
“Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie” aimed at young children, and “The End of Oak Street,” a PG-13 action film, vied for the third spot in their opening weekend. Studio estimates indicated that Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor’s film slightly edged out with an estimated $21 million, compared to the animated film’s $20.5 million.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” maintained its lead three weekends into its notable run, accumulating $70 million from U.S. and Canadian theaters. The domestic total reached an impressive $785.8 million. On the global front, it collected $118.7 million, crossing the $2 billion mark, and becoming the eighth movie to hit this milestone.
“The Odyssey” secured second place again in its fifth weekend, earning $23.2 million. Its domestic earnings rose to $504.7 million. Internationally, it grossed $98 million, with China contributing $36.6 million, pushing its worldwide earnings to over $1.2 billion.
“The End of Oak Street” performed beyond predictions, earning $21 million from 3,446 locations. Internationally, it added $26 million, totaling a $47 million global opening against its $80 million production budget. Directed by David Robert Mitchell, the film follows McGregor and Hathaway as parents in 1982 whose neighborhood bizarrely shifts to prehistoric times. It received favorable reviews from critics but got a B CinemaScore from audiences. According to exit polls, slightly over half of its viewers said they would recommend it.
“Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie,” distributed by Paramount Pictures, opened in 3,545 theaters in the U.S. and Canada. The film, PG-rated, is the third Paw Patrol installment since 2021. The audience gave it an A CinemaScore, and its worldwide total stood at $69 million.
“Katseye: Wild Hearts,” a documentary, finished in the fifth spot, collecting $4 million from 724 screens. Newcomers in the top ten included “Six: The Musical Live,” with $3 million, and “The Brink of War,” with $2.7 million. “Vishwanath & Sons,” a Tamil-language romance, made $1.6 million, landing in tenth place.
Outside the top ten, the Matthew McConaughey crime thriller “The Rivals of Amziah King” earned slightly over $1 million from 632 theaters. The biopic “Tony” about young Anthony Bourdain garnered $706,676 from 37 theaters in its second weekend and plans to expand.
The summer box office season concluded on a high note, generating over $4.2 billion in ticket sales. This figure is 5.7% higher than the pre-pandemic summer of 2019, with expectations that it will rank among the top five summers ever, according to Paul Dergarabedian from Rentrak. The total for the year nearly reached $6.9 billion.
