Jamal Adams Faces Setback with Minnesota Vikings Due to Knee Injury

Jamal Adams, initially picked by the New York Jets in the first round, returned to MetLife Stadium to compete for a spot with the Minnesota Vikings. Unfortunately, things turned south quickly. Just two weeks after joining the team, Adams was carted off the field during the Vikings’ 13-10 win over a knee injury.

While covering receiver Calvin Austin III from the New York Giants, Adams sprinted across the field and fell to the ground with a non-contact injury. His quick departure from the turf signaled trouble, later confirmed by the Vikings’ head coach Kevin O’Connell. In an in-game interview, O’Connell mentioned that the initial check on Adams’ knee did not look promising.

O’Connell expressed, “In such a short amount of time, Jamal has done such an incredible job. His passion is felt every day, and losing him is tough.”

The coach’s words underline the seriousness of Adams’ injury, which is disappointing given his performance during the game. As a linebacker, Adams made notable plays, including a significant run stop.

Adams joined the Vikings just before training camp commenced on July 28. Heading into his tenth NFL season, he adjusted his mindset, necessary for contending for a roster position at this stage of his career.

Known for his robust presence, Adams was a key player for the Jets after being selected sixth overall in 2017. He was a Pro Bowl selection in both 2018 and 2019, earning First Team All-Pro honors in the latter. That season, his stats included 6.5 sacks, 75 tackles, two forced fumbles, a pick-six, and seven defended passes over 14 games.

Adams’ journey post-2019 saw him traded to the Seattle Seahawks and later splitting the 2024 season between the Tennessee Titans and Detroit Lions. By 2025, he settled with the Las Vegas Raiders and transitioned from safety to linebacker. The Vikings intended to utilize him similarly until his recent injury.

Despite the setback, Adams remains hopeful for a recovery, although non-contact knee injuries typically suggest serious difficulties. His ability to adapt and contribute as a versatile defender remains well-regarded within the league.
