Kevin O’Connell Selects Kyler Murray as Starting Quarterback for Vikings

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell made a decisive move in naming Kyler Murray as the starting quarterback, overshadowing J.J. McCarthy, the team’s 2024 first-round pick. Reports suggest the decision wasn’t solely based on training camp performances.

Concerns within the Vikings organization regarding McCarthy’s predictability surfaced last summer. He missed his entire rookie season due to a knee injury and faced consistency issues in 2025, according to CBS Sports.

“A franchise quarterback is supposed to be the stability piece of a franchise, like you know what you’re getting every day. But with J.J., you weren’t sure which version you were going to get,” a source revealed.

Despite McCarthy’s struggles, some believed Max Brosmer, an undrafted free agent, should have been the starting quarterback instead. McCarthy completed 57.6% of his passes with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions across 10 games. During these games, Minnesota achieved a 6-4 record. This led the Vikings to be active in the quarterback market this offseason.

Kyle Murray’s experience, including a turbulent tenure with the Arizona Cardinals, appealed to the Vikings. With a new GM, Nolan Teasley, in charge, the team is not tied to McCarthy’s selection by former GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, who was fired.

McCarthy, now in his third year, remains a backup. A defensive coach told CBS Sports that McCarthy is talented but needs to learn effective game management, avoiding unnecessary actions. His sample size is limited, but at 23 years, he has potential for growth.

Kyler Murray brings more proven stability, which O’Connell values. Reflecting on past performances with Sam Darnold in 2024, O’Connell helped Darnold revive his career, leading the Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory.

The Vikings hope Murray’s arrival will bolster their offense. McCarthy must continue to work hard, awaiting another chance to prove his capabilities.

In preseason play against the Giants, McCarthy completed four passes for 34 yards. Carson Wentz completed six passes for 56 yards and a touchdown. Murray maintained offensive momentum with his pass attempts during the game’s opening series.
