In July, the New York Islanders revealed plans to let fans design the team’s next third jersey. This move was intended to involve fans directly and reduce potential complaints about the design. Despite this, the unveiling of eight finalists has sparked dissatisfaction on social media; opinions are largely negative.
Although none of the designs are offensive, excitement is scarce. Identifying the best option from these finalist designs proves challenging. One option stands out for some; a navy jersey with the “ISLANDERS” wordmark and a chest stripe. Such designs historically resonate well, but past third jerseys, used between 2011 and 2014, lack fondness in the team’s history.
The design tool provided by the Islanders allowed fans to engage in the creative process. Despite criticism, it facilitated fan interaction and submissions, including those like the author’s, which were not among the finalists.
One design bears resemblance to the Edmonton Oilers’ past orange jerseys, further contributing to fan discontent. Feedback on social media from fans, many of whom had their submissions rejected, reflects widespread dissatisfaction. Regardless of reception, one of these designs will be chosen to debut next season.
The winning designer will enjoy a “VIP gameday experience.” This initiative reflects an effort by the Islanders to innovate, despite fans questioning the necessity of a third jersey alongside their admired home and away designs.
