Prediction markets show increased confidence in the Democrats retaining the Wisconsin governor’s office. This comes after moderate Democrat David Crowley won the gubernatorial primary against progressive state Representative Francesca Hong. Crowley aims to become Wisconsin’s first Black governor. He narrowly beat Hong by positioning himself as the candidate most capable of defeating U.S. Representative Tom Tiffany, who has President Donald Trump’s endorsement, in the November election.
Crowley’s campaign had initially faltered, leading him to quit in early July. However, his campaign saw renewed energy after receiving the endorsement of outgoing Democratic Governor Tony Evers less than two weeks later. The prediction markets, which had favored Republicans, shifted in favor of Democrats after Hong conceded and the Associated Press declared Crowley’s victory early Wednesday morning.
As of 8 a.m. Eastern time, prediction platform Kashi indicated a 78 percent chance of Democrats maintaining control of the governor’s office, up from 39.4 percent on Sunday. Conversely, Republicans’ odds dropped to 22 percent. On rival prediction market Polymarket, Democrats are at a 77 percent chance of victory, a significant increase from 41 percent the previous day. Republican odds have decreased to 22 percent from 51 percent noted on Monday.
Prediction markets allow traders to engage in buying and selling contracts related to political outcomes and current events. These platforms provide probability estimates by converting real-money wagers into trends. Such markets reflect current trader sentiments rather than predict future certainty. The Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball still classify the Wisconsin gubernatorial race as a toss-up.
Attracting Independent Voters
Both Crowley and Tiffany must appeal to moderate and independent voters for a November win. These voters are pivotal in Wisconsin due to the state’s narrow electoral margins. Crowley’s campaign manager, Garren Randolph, emphasized the candidate’s commitment to unity. He stated, “Crowley’s focus is on bringing people together, securing the backing of Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and anyone who believes in collaboration for Wisconsin.”
Tiffany also reached out to this voter demographic during his victory speech. He reassured diverse political labels of a place within his commonsense movement. He invited those who aspire to provide future opportunities for their children to join his campaign.
Mainstream Democrats Support Crowley
Crowley’s victory is backed by mainstream Democrats who believe centrist candidates have better chances against Republicans. There was concern Hong’s progressive stance may not attract moderate and independent voters adequately.
Jim Kessler, vice president for policy at the centrist group Third Way, explains this skepticism isn’t specifically against Hong but relates to structural differences in governor’s races. He emphasized governor roles demand unique voter considerations, unlike legislative roles. The decision influences voters concerning taxes, business, education, and safety.
Although Hong engaged left-wing voters, national progressive figures like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders did not endorse her candidacy. They have supported other progressive candidates in different races. Ocasio-Cortez explained on ABC’s This Week that her focus was on regaining control of Congress and strategically positioning the party for the upcoming Senate contest.
