Plans for a towering residential building in Beverly Hills have taken a significant step forward. The city has approved The Millennium Residences, a 418-foot-tall structure that will become the tallest building in the area when completed. Millennium Partners, the developers, shared this milestone with Newsweek.
Development Progress
According to Mario J. Palumbo Jr., managing partner at Millennium Partners, the project has entered its next development phase with the city’s approval. Formal design steps have started, with construction anticipated to begin in 2027. Located at 8300 Wilshire Boulevard, this high-rise aims to add 211 new homes, including 32 affordable housing units. Designed by Handel Architects and Rios, the building intends to reflect Beverly Hills’ commitment to quality growth and architecture.
Approval Amid Housing Crisis
The approval of this project occurs as California faces a housing crisis. The Public Policy Institute of California highlights high-cost burdens for renters and homeowners across the state. More than half of renters and 40% of mortgaged homeowners in California spend over 30% of their income on housing. This approval followed previous critiques of Beverly Hills’ handling of another high-rise proposal.
The Millennium Residences met the requirements of California’s Assembly Bill 2011, which allows streamlined ministerial reviews for housing that meets certain criteria. This process skips public hearings and California Environmental Quality Act reviews. Palumbo Jr. noted that the bill aims to facilitate needed housing on commercial sites.
Community Concerns
The project will involve demolishing an existing mini-mall and businesses, bringing community concerns. The site will have over 10,000 square feet of commercial space intended for restaurant leases. Local residents have expressed worries over losing crucial services.
Amy Amsterdam, a nearby resident, stated to Beverly Press and Park Labrea News, “That mini-mall is crucial to our neighborhood.”
Despite concerns, Millennium Partners claims to actively engage with community members and local property owners, reflecting on their history of community-focused developments.
California’s Evolving Skyline
California’s skyline continues to change as developers pursue new high-rise projects. Los Angeles sees new developments like One Beverly Hills, with structures surpassing the height of The Millennium Residences.
