Democratic Representative John Larson of Connecticut has been defeated in his primary race by former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin. NBC News projects Bronin’s victory in a district known for its Democratic leanings.

Larson, aged 78, has been a prominent figure in Connecticut’s political scene. He served over a decade in the state Legislature and nearly three decades in Congress. His tenure included work on Social Security, and he received support from the state’s congressional delegation, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and significant unions.

In contrast, Bronin, at 47, campaigned vigorously for change. He emphasized the need for new leadership following President Donald Trump’s second term. Bronin’s campaign was well-funded and resonated with party activists, securing the state party’s endorsement.

Larson’s loss marks the tenth incumbent House member to suffer a primary defeat this year, comprising seven Democrats and three Republicans.

“In this moment, when Donald Trump is president, the job of a member of Congress isn’t just in the subcommittee rooms, it’s what you are doing outside the walls of the Capitol to build a movement,” Bronin shared with NBC News in May.

Bronin argued Democratic Congress members must actively work to regain voter trust. Meanwhile, Larson highlighted his continued efforts against Trump, pointing to endorsements from numerous elected officials.

“I have the endorsement of more elected officials, every sitting member in the congressional delegation because they understand what I’ve been able to deliver,” said Larson. He defended his long record of accomplishments.

Bronin countered, focusing on the need for fresh perspectives in office. He expressed concerns about the stagnation Larson faced after decades in the same role.
