Director’s Early Inspiration

Growing up in Maui with five siblings, Cretton’s mother limited television time, encouraging imaginative play. A family trip to California introduced him to a video camera, sparking his interest in filmmaking, further fueled by visits to Hollywood and theme parks. This passion continued back in Maui, where he began making movies constantly.

Cretton’s initial post-college job involved working at a group home for at-risk teenagers, an experience he transformed into the film Short Term 12 featuring Brie Larson, Rami Malek, and LaKeith Stanfield.
