However, the results have been underwhelming, with little optimism surrounding the campus.
The hire was intended to elevate North Carolina to the spotlight, similar to Deion Sanders’ effect on Colorado. While the Tar Heels drew attention in the 2025 season, it was often for the wrong reasons, demonstrated in the opening game against TCU.
Celebrity presence, such as Michael Jordan, enhanced the spectacle, drawing media attention to Belichick’s college debut. Yet, unlike Colorado’s early success under Sanders, North Carolina experienced setbacks.
Navigating a roster rebuild with over sixty new players proved challenging through the transfer portal. UNC already had a recognized brand, which made the need to catch national attention unnecessary. However, off-field issues have raised doubts about the program’s longevity.

Adding to the troubles, GM Michael Lombardi is under investigation following a tip of misconduct. Placed on administrative leave, Lombardi is represented by attorney Tom Mars as outside counsel investigates the HR complaint.
