Republican gubernatorial nominee and Marine veteran Victor Marx is building a Marine-focused team to counter the influence of democratic socialism, which he views as increasingly influential. Marx, who won Colorado’s primary in June, emphasizes public safety, social conservatism, and cost of living in his campaign.
He argues that socialism is a front for communism, stating, “There’s never been a successful socialism program… socialism, it’s just a transitionary word for communism.” His remarks arrive as democratic socialists gain ground in Colorado and across the country, with notable wins such as Melat Kiros unseating longtime Rep. Diana DeGette.
The Marine Approach
To combat what Marx perceives as a socialist shift, he has chosen retired Marine Col. George Markert as his running mate. Both aim to apply military discipline and integrity to state governance. Markert’s background includes over 30 years in the Marine Corps with top-level roles at U.S. Central Command and Marine Logistics Groups, followed by work in North American infrastructure operations.
Marx, who founded All Things Possible Ministries, presents himself and Markert as political outsiders, asserting their ability to address socialist movements effectively.
Critique of Democratic Socialists
Marx criticizes the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) as organized and well-funded, reshaping Colorado’s political landscape. The DSA endorses positions like abolishing police, creating a significant political divide centered on public safety. Marx contrasts this with high crime rates in Colorado, noting the state’s crime statistics exceed national averages, with violent crimes about 28% higher and property crimes approximately 41% higher than national figures.
Marx argues that democratic socialist policies focus more on “policing speech” than on public safety, suggesting that residents are concerned about crime as state leaders prioritize ideological policies over free speech.
Contrast with Opponent Phil Weiser
Marx challenges the approach of his opponent, Colorado Democratic Attorney General Phil Weiser. Marx criticizes increased government spending under Weiser, arguing it has not enhanced safety in Colorado. Weiser, known for challenging the Trump administration in court, faces criticism from Marx for not making the state “safer.” Marx claims, “So folks are ready for a change,” stating that hardworking taxpayers see diminishing returns from government efforts.
According to Marx, the upcoming election is a clear choice between his agenda and that of the Democrats, holding the latter responsible for the rise of the DSA.
