Los Angeles Mayor Criticizes Potential LAPD Contract with Flock Safety

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has expressed concerns over a possible contract between Flock Safety and the Los Angeles Police Department. Flock Safety provides automated license plate readers. Mayor Bass stated that the company has lost the confidence of residents in Los Angeles and other cities across the United States. She emphasized the notable impact on immigrant communities, where federal policies have raised privacy concerns.

Bass urged the LAPD to seek alternative solutions. She recommended avoiding data-sharing companies in law enforcement surveillance efforts. The LAPD needs to identify another company that doesn’t share data, she advised.

A sign this week warned drivers about surveillance cameras in Beverly Hills, California, serving as a reminder of the surveillance debate.
