The National Weather Service’s Aviation Weather Center has launched a new tool to help airline passengers experience fewer bumpy flights. This tool, called the Graphical Turbulence Guidance Nowcast (GTGN), provides pilots with detailed turbulence information in near real time, allowing for quicker adjustments to flight paths. The system updates every 15 minutes, combining aircraft observations with weather and atmospheric data to offer a detailed view of turbulent conditions. This enables flight crews to identify rough air pockets more effectively, which traditional forecast models might miss.
The GTGN offers crucial data for flight safety, as turbulence remains a significant cause of in-flight injuries. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) highlights the importance of this system, which is backed by the FAA and was developed in collaboration with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and Colorado State University’s Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA). By providing data from altitudes of 100 to 50,000 feet, GTGN complements existing turbulence forecasts and helps in-flight adjustments.
Understanding Turbulence
Turbulence results from irregular air movements causing an aircraft to shake or change altitude unexpectedly. While uncomfortable, modern planes are built to handle severe levels of turbulence. Various types affect flights, including convective turbulence from thunderstorms, clear-air turbulence from jet streams, and turbulent winds over mountain ranges.
The aviation industry measures turbulence using the Eddy Dissipation Rate (EDR), which ranks turbulence from Light to Extreme. Light turbulence usually suggests smooth flights, while extreme turbulence can cause violent aircraft movements.
America’s Most Turbulent Flights
Data from turbulence-tracking platform Turbli shows that many of North America’s bumpiest flights occur in the western United States. The Rocky Mountains contribute significantly to turbulence in this region. Analysis of nearly 10,000 routes highlights that flights near these mountain ranges, particularly in Denver and surrounding areas, face frequent turbulence.
Airports in cities like Denver, Bozeman, and Albuquerque rank highest for turbulence potential, with routes crossing the mountains consistently experiencing more turbulence.
Projected Turbulent Routes in 2025
According to Turbli, the most turbulent routes in North America for 2025 include flights between Denver and Jackson Hole, Albuquerque to Denver, and Denver to Salt Lake City. Despite their reputation, most of these routes still average within the “light” turbulence category.
As demand for air travel remains high in the U.S., new tools like GTGN aim to reduce delays and turbulence-related discomfort, potentially improving the overall passenger experience.
