Scientists have recently achieved unprecedented clarity in capturing images of the sun’s surface, uncovering a peculiar and dynamic appearance. Observing the sun directly without adequate eye protection is hazardous. Researchers, however, utilized the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, situated on Maui, Hawaii, to safely observe its intense surface.
The initial purpose of these images was to refine and test the capabilities of the telescope. Unexpectedly, these images unveiled the sun’s brilliant outer shell in unprecedented detail. They also revealed unusual feathery patterns moving across the sun’s surface. Solar physicist Ruizhu Chen from Stanford University, not involved in this study, noted these patterns resembled famous artworks, such as Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night.’
The study noted the ripples on the sun’s surface resulted from magnetized plasma particles moving at varying speeds. This creates a phenomenon akin to wind-induced waves on water. Although scientists have observed similar behaviors on Earth and other planets like Jupiter and Saturn, this was a first on the solar surface at such resolution, according to Friedrich Wöger of the National Solar Observatory.
These findings appear in the journal Nature. Understanding the sun’s internal processes helps track coronal mass ejections—massive energy releases that can head toward Earth. Such events can cause solar storms, disrupting GPS and communication systems while creating vibrant auroras.
