Senate Republicans are taking measures to prevent a government shutdown well ahead of the deadline. They have voted to pass a procedural hurdle for extending funding through the midterm elections until early December.

The deadline for government funding is September 30, marking the end of the current fiscal year. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., advocates for early action to ensure more certainty rather than facing last-minute challenges.

“There’s been enough uncertainty this last year, and, you know, unfortunately, I think through two government shutdowns that extended for a long period of time, it’s better for everybody if there’s predictability, certainty,” Thune remarked.

Recent history illustrates the impact of government shutdowns during President Donald Trump’s administration. The longest shutdown spanned over 40 days, spurred by disputes over now-expired Obamacare tax subsidies. An earlier 70-day shutdown occurred when bipartisan funding collapsed following a tragic incident involving immigration enforcement.

At present, a move toward bipartisanship in the Senate aims to bypass another shutdown by advancing the continuing resolution (CR). Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., supports the CR, viewing it as a sensible approach that maintains ongoing bipartisan budget negotiations.

“For months, Democrats have been clear: we want to fund the government, avoid a shutdown and pass strong, bipartisan appropriations bills that improve people’s lives,” Schumer declared.

Republican leaders are optimistic about advancing the CR to the House during the Senate’s final week before legislators return to their home states. Along with the CR, they hope to push through nominations, a Russia sanctions package, a struggling crypto market structure package, and confirm Todd Blanche as Attorney General.
