This summer, lifeguards have been essential in rescuing individuals caught in challenging ocean conditions. A remarkable episode unfolded at Silver Beach in Volusia County, Florida, where quick thinking and expert training led to the successful rescue of a 5-year-old boy.
On July 30, lifeguard Dempsey Manhart was readying for his lunch break when a family approached him. Frantic for help, they flagged Manhart down because a young boy was unconscious in the water. As reported by FOX 35 Orlando, Manhart immediately intervened to assist in bringing the child ashore.
Mackenzie Malone, Manhart’s fellow lifeguard, joined the effort promptly. She checked the child’s pulse, and the lifeguards initiated CPR. Malone, now in her fourth summer working as a lifeguard, experienced her first lifesaving rescue of a child. This readiness highlights how lifeguards prepare for any scenario.
Malone emphasized the need to always know how to respond to emergencies and stated, “We’re always expecting anything. We always make sure that we know what to do no matter what the scenario is.” Recognizing the urgency of the situation, she responded swiftly to Manhart’s call for assistance.
The child, initially unconscious, had a head wound, causing concern about the severity. With the duo’s immediate action through CPR, the boy eventually began breathing independently. Malone later expressed gratitude after successfully employing her lifeguard training, resulting in the child’s recovery and return home.
“I’m just very grateful that [with] everything we followed, it worked out and that [the boy] actually is able to have a life and come home to a family.”
The lifeguards hope this rescue serves as a reminder for beachgoers to swim near staffed lifeguard towers, ensuring access to trained responders during emergencies.

Officials emphasize the importance of consulting lifeguards about ocean conditions before entering the water. The National Weather Service advises swimmers caught in a rip current to remain calm, swim parallel to the shore, and gradually return to land. Those unable to escape should float, tread water, and signal for help.
