High-Potency Cannabis and Mental Health Risks

Warnings on Cannabis Potency

Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical contributor, cautions against the effects of high-potency cannabis. He explains that increased levels of THC contribute to addiction and harmful mental health impacts. This is particularly significant in the development of young minds. Siegel calls into question claims that cannabis alleviates anxiety and depression.

Marijuana Use in the U.S.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s survey reveals 21.4 million Americans use marijuana daily or near-daily. This now surpasses daily use of cigarettes and alcohol. Daily use is identified by marijuana consumption on 300 or more days a year.

Between 2022 and 2025, daily use increased by 21%, adding about 3.7 million frequent users. The most significant growth occurred between 2021 and 2022. Adults aged 26 and older lead this rise rather than teenagers.

Comparative Substance Use

Despite the proliferation of marijuana, alcohol remains the most used substance overall. Monthly alcohol usage was 129 million people compared to 43.8 million for marijuana. From 2021 to 2025, general marijuana use rose to 15.1%.

Cigarette use decreased from 20.1% in 2021 to 15.9% in 2025. Conversely, marijuana usage climbed during this period.

Workplace Substance Use Trends

A Modern Health survey highlights an increasing tendency for employees to use substances post-work, especially THC products. Gen Z workers show a notable trend in marijuana use over alcohol after work.

Expert Concerns

Dr. Siegel warns about the misconception of marijuana’s effectiveness in treating pain, insomnia, and anxiety. He stresses the adverse effects of rising THC levels on mental faculties and the increase in fatal motor vehicle incidents linked to cannabis.

He attributes the growth in use to a lack of awareness about the dangers of marijuana compared to cigarettes and alcohol. He notes a trend toward acceptance of marijuana amidst declining cigarette and alcohol consumption.
