A senior House Democrat is encouraging his party to challenge the growing influence of the socialist wing within their ranks. Representative Tom Suozzi from New York expressed his concerns about the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in an interview with Fox News Digital. He compared the DSA to the House Freedom Caucus on the Republican side and criticized their use of the term ‘democratic’ in their name, suggesting that their principles are primarily socialist.
Suozzi stated, “Much like the Republicans have had to deal with the Freedom Caucus, the Democrats are going to have to deal with this group. I don’t like the idea of them using ‘democratic.’ I think that as the Democratic Party, we should be fighting against that.”
The DSA has made notable strides in primary elections, defeating incumbent House progressives in places like New York and Colorado. As these candidates gain traction, Suozzi emphasized the importance of taking a proactive stance against the perception of a DSA takeover. He said, “I try not to waste my time on worry. I try to take action. That’s not me and that’s not us, and this is why that’s not us, and why this is not me. And I fight back against it.”
Suozzi is part of a diminishing group of moderates working to find bipartisan solutions. He co-chairs the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, focusing on legislative cooperation between parties. With the midterm elections approaching, he remains a target for Republicans. His district in the affluent Long Island suburbs, once won by President Donald Trump, remains a pivotal battleground.
In terms of election strategy, Suozzi advises focusing on policy rather than personality. He points to pressing issues like high grocery and fuel prices, rising insurance costs, and challenges in the housing market as critical points. “Your grocery prices are higher, your fuel prices are high, your health insurance costs are higher. Your energy bill is higher. Your kids can’t buy a house,” Suozzi explained. “It’s less about Trump himself. It should be a referendum on this administration’s performance addressing the things in your life.”
Meanwhile, Republicans warn that a Democrat-controlled House could enable the party’s socialist wing to advance unpopular policies. In New York, Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a self-identified democratic socialist, has been highlighted by the right as a notable figure.
Suozzi emphasized the importance of distinguishing himself from the socialist agenda. He launched ‘The Promise to America’ initiative, gathering congressional support to promote capitalist values and mainstream policies. “We’re capitalist, not socialist. We’re for safety, not lawlessness. We’re proud, not ashamed of America,” Suozzi declared.
He faces Republican Mike LiPetri, endorsed by Trump, in the forthcoming election. Suozzi’s actions and initiatives exemplify a committed effort to steer his party away from socialist influences while addressing vital issues affecting Americans.
