Major soccer nations may avoid the 2030 World Cup after UEFA decided to boycott FIFA. UEFA, Europe’s football governing body, opposes FIFA’s new business proposal. FIFA proposes a company named FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) that invites private investors. This company will manage FIFA’s commercial rights and event operations.

UEFA strongly disagrees with infusing private capital into FIFA activities, including the World Cup. In a statement, UEFA and its 55 members announced a boycott of FIFA competitions. This decision follows FIFA’s communication to its 211 members, giving a deadline of September 19 to agree with 75% approval required to modify its bylaws.

FIFA assures it will remain not-for-profit, while FFE operates as a commercial branch. FIFA President Gianni Infantino promotes that private investments would yield $10 billion in funds for members, offering $40 million per association. He vows increased development funds for smaller federations, rising from $8 million to $20 million by 2030.

“The World Cup cannot be treated as an investment product. It is one of football’s greatest sporting legacies,” UEFA stated. “No part of it should ever be surrendered to private investors. The World Cup is not for sale.”

UEFA’s declaration further criticized FIFA’s approach, accusing a lack of consultation with key stakeholders in the sport. They demand a complete dismissal of such proposals and promise not to participate in FIFA events until the ideas are discarded.

UEFA’s statement emphasized the game’s integrity, asserting that soccer isn’t open for sale. They insist that their participation is contingent upon FIFA ceasing plans for private investments.

If the FFE plan is approved, Thrive Eternal is expected to head the investment group, acquiring up to 20% stake for over $4.2 billion. Thrive Eternal is linked to Joshua Kushner, son-in-law of ex-U.S. President Donald Trump.

Should UEFA proceed with this boycott, future World Cups may exclude teams from Europe, such as England, France, Germany, and Spain. However, UEFA-controlled competitions like the European Championships will continue.

The 2030 men’s World Cup will be hosted jointly by Spain, Morocco, and Portugal, while the 2027 Women’s World Cup will occur in Brazil.
