Justice Jackson’s Reflections on Her Role

During a conversation with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson offered insights into her experience on the Supreme Court. Jackson, the first Black woman in this iconic role, addressed the significant challenges she faces, particularly concerning security.

The Impact of Security Concerns

Jackson emphasized that heightened security needs have been one of the most surprising aspects of her position. This level of security is something she had not encountered during her previous roles in lower courts. As Jackson explained, security concerns have forced her to significantly adjust her lifestyle.

“It has meant really having to adjust my life. I can’t just go out in any meaningful way as I used to, and that can be a downside, just not being able to live a normal life,” she stated.

Despite these adjustments, Jackson considers her position a privilege. She acknowledges that although her role comes with unique challenges, it also offers a significant platform for impact.

Maintaining Unbiased Approach

Jackson also discussed the importance of maintaining impartiality in her role. She relies on court employees to ensure her activities align with ethical standards and avoid conflicts of interest.

“I try to be very, very mindful and scrupulous with respect to that, because as you say, our obligation is to be unbiased in our approach.”

The Motivation Behind Her Career Path

Jackson shared that her desire to attend law school was driven by a longstanding aspiration to become a lawyer, in keeping with her parents’ emphasis on public service.

“I had always, always wanted to be a lawyer. I thought it was the highest and best use of my time and talent.”

Security Concerns Extend Beyond the Court

Recently, fellow justices, including Amy Coney Barrett and Elena Kagan, have raised security concerns before Congress. They have advocated for additional funding to enhance protection measures amid rising threats. These requests highlight the growing vulnerability and scrutiny that Supreme Court justices face.

Barrett recounted receiving a bulletproof vest and disruptions caused by security threats, further illustrating the risks involved.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh faced a notable threat in 2022 when an armed individual was apprehended outside his home. These incidents underscore the escalating security challenges confronting the Supreme Court.
