Early into NFL training camp, the Atlanta Falcons are already facing quarterback injury challenges. Tua Tagovailoa, who joined the Falcons this offseason to compete for the starting position with Michael Penix Jr., experienced a ‘flare-up’ of an undisclosed injury. This was stated by the new head coach, Kevin Stefanski.
Stefanski did not specify the nature of Tagovailoa’s issue, but noted his sidelining was necessary. It has been reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Tagovailoa’s injury involves a back issue.

Stefanski shared optimism about Tagovailoa’s return, expecting him back to practice soon. Meanwhile, Michael Penix Jr., recovering from a torn ACL last season, faces his own challenges. He may be absent for the initial four weeks of training camp. To strengthen their quarterback roster, the Falcons signed veteran Cooper Rush.
The team released Trevor Siemian, leaving undrafted rookie Jack Strand as the only healthy quarterback following Tagovailoa’s setback. While Penix undertakes individual drills and 7-on-7 sessions, he is yet to participate in complete team activities.
Penix has faced multiple injuries, enduring four season-ending ones during his college career before transferring to Washington. His past influences his cautious approach, as he stated, “The last thing I want to do is rush back just to get back on the field.”
This is the third ACL. We’re not taking it lightly.
Stefanski acknowledges the unpredictability of injuries, especially early in training camp. The Falcons’ situation this season appears intriguing due to both their quarterback circumstances and their new executive setup, which includes former quarterback Matt Ryan as the team president of football operations.
The Falcons aim for a playoff return. They last appeared in the postseason in 2017, when Ryan was their quarterback. The team has not achieved a winning season since.
