The Tennessee Volunteers have experienced a challenging offseason. This began with the dismissal of Chaz Coleman, a five-star edge-rusher transfer from Penn State, a few weeks ago.
The situation escalated on Wednesday when the school learned of a suspension involving star linebacker Arion Carter. The NCAA suspended Carter for multiple games, impacting his prospects for the 2027 draft.
Tennessee star linebacker Arion Carter has been suspended for two games by the NCAA because he returned to college after his agent had paid for a $427 flight to an NFL pre-draft training facility,” reported Adam Sparks of the Knoxville News.
Carter’s NCAA violation stems from unique circumstances. Initially, he declared for the 2026 NFL draft but later withdrew due to an injury requiring surgery. Before the injury, his agent covered a flight cost, which Carter reimbursed. Despite this, the NCAA deemed it an unfair benefit and penalized Carter.
The NCAA stated, “NCAA rules are clear: student-athletes may not sign with agents to pursue NFL draft opportunities, and this student-athlete knowingly violated those longstanding rules.” The statement continued, noting that schools must declare student-athletes ineligible for rule breaches. Reinstatement often requires repayment or suspension from competition.
The suspension sidelines Carter for games against Furman on September 5 and Georgia Tech on September 12. This excludes one of the team’s top defensive talents from early matches.
Last season, the 21-year-old Carter received second-team All-SEC honors. He achieved 76 tackles, six tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, two defended passes, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Despite his absence, these early games are not expected to derail Tennessee’s season, but the loss of a key player poses a significant concern.
Head coach Josh Huepel voiced disagreement with the NCAA’s decision. He expressed support for Carter, stating, “Arion made the right decision for his future health and well-being.” Huepel highlighted Carter’s upcoming graduation in public health with honors and the team’s anticipation of his return for training camp.
