The head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, Kyle Shanahan, sustained injuries in a car accident earlier this month, which will affect his involvement at the beginning of training camp. The team shared this update on Saturday, coinciding with the camp’s commencement.

A source familiar with Shanahan’s injuries, who spoke to The Associated Press under confidentiality, revealed that Shanahan suffered a concussion, fractured his nose and several ribs, and injured his hands. The person was not authorized to disclose the details publicly. The team only described the injuries as ‘non-life-threatening’ and expressed appreciation for the first responders at the crash scene.

The 49ers’ practice on Sunday will be overseen by assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster, along with coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer.

Shanahan is gearing up for his tenth season with the 49ers and is widely regarded for his exceptional offensive strategies. During his tenure, the team reached the Super Bowl twice, following the 2019 and 2023 seasons, and appeared twice in the NFC Championship game in 2021 and 2022. Shanahan has accumulated a record of 91 wins and 72 losses in both regular and postseason games, placing him third in franchise history for victories, behind George Seifert (108) and Bill Walsh (102).

Despite numerous injuries last season, the team achieved a 12-5 record during the regular season and secured a playoff victory, leading to Shanahan ranking fifth in the AP NFL Coach of the Year voting.
