Bryce Baxa’s Athletic Journey: The Choice Between Baseball and Football

A Promising Path in Sports

Bryce Baxa, a Yorkville junior, is on the cusp of choosing between two beloved sports: baseball and football. While this decision may be challenging, it reflects his athletic talent. During July, Baxa balanced summer camp workouts in varsity football for the Foxes and travel baseball tournaments with his North Aurora-based Team Elite.

Yorkville coach Dan McGuire designed playful camp activities, such as water balloon dodgeball, to lighten the mood. Yet, the focus soon returned to Baxa’s future in sports. “College recruiters are likely to consider his film from this season,” McGuire noted. He praised Baxa’s dual-sport capabilities, highlighting his potential for Division I football.

Baseball and Football Talents

On May 5, 2026, Baxa demonstrated his baseball skills against Oswego East, showcasing his defensive prowess. A versatile player, he earned all-conference honors at defensive tackle last fall. He also received a game-day invitation to Kansas State.

As a freshman, Baxa excelled in varsity baseball for the Foxes. Standing at 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, his primary position is catcher, although he also pitches and bats as a designated hitter. Reflecting on his promotions, Baxa acknowledged the challenge posed by the football team’s veteran offensive line, which expedited his skill development.

Training and Experience

Baxa’s training involves adapting to high-velocity pitching, using a machine that simulates speeds of 95 to 105 mph from a distance of 40 feet. This preparation is pivotal as younger players encounter increasingly faster pitches.

In football, Baxa and junior tackle James Sapp Jr. formed a formidable defensive line, accumulating 47 and 48 tackles, respectively, with 7 wins and 3 losses for the Foxes. Coach McGuire emphasized the defensive line’s strength and Baxa’s qualities: strength, explosiveness, and toughness. His stats include four tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and a field goal block.

From Linebacker to Defensive Tackle

Initially a linebacker, Baxa transitioned to defensive tackle on Yorkville’s freshman team. He expressed concerns about facing stronger opponents, especially being undersized. Weighing between 235 and 242 pounds last season, Baxa prepared rigorously to increase his size for competitive play.

The upcoming season might see him at defensive end due to weight adjustments. His older brother Blake, crucial in his varsity preparation, started aiding Baxa in seventh grade. With permission from assistant coach Chris Galloway, Bryce joined weightlifting sessions, boosting his bench press significantly.

Driven by Family and Coaches

Baxa attributes his optimal strength trajectory to right timing and supportive community. His goal is clear: to play college sports. “Achieving this would honor my parents and coaches, who dedicated time and effort to my growth,” he affirmed.
