The Arizona Cardinals faced a significant change on Wednesday with tight end Travis Vokolek announcing his retirement from professional football at 28, due to a neck injury. The injury occurred during a game against the Indianapolis Colts when Vokolek was blocking on a kickoff and landed awkwardly, requiring him to be stretchered off the field.

Vokolek shared the news of his retirement on social media, expressing gratitude to those who supported him throughout his career. “After numerous visits with doctors and neurologists over the past couple of months, I have been advised to medically retire from the NFL due to a serious neck injury that I suffered this past season,” he wrote. He emphasized appreciation for living out his childhood dream of playing in the NFL, gaining life lessons and unforgettable memories.

Expressing his gratitude, Vokolek thanked his teammates, coaches, and the training staff of the Arizona Cardinals for their support during this challenging period. He specifically acknowledged his wife’s unwavering support during his recovery efforts.

“I have attacked everyday of being a professional football player with passion, determination, and discipline,” he added. “I can say that I truly left everything out on the field. Thank you for all of the love and support. Lastly, thank you football!”

Vokolek’s football journey began at Rutgers and Nebraska before turning pro. He joined the Baltimore Ravens in 2023 as an undrafted free agent but did not play in any games. Later, in December 2023, he signed with the Cardinals and played in eight games, without becoming a key part of the offense.
