Sean Davis, CEO and co-founder of The Federalist, and comedian Joe Machi are advocating for the permanent adoption of daylight saving time. Davis humorously dismisses mornings as unimportant, highlighting the preference for afternoon sunlight when more people are active. Machi points out the advantages for children’s safety and enjoyment in the evening as they return from after-school activities.
Research highlights that exposure to natural daylight could improve sleep patterns. A study by the University of Manchester identified that adults with consistent and brighter daytime light exposure tend to fall asleep earlier, wake up earlier, and experience deeper sleep early in the night. This research was published in the journal NPJ Biological Timing and Sleep and involved over 500 days of data collected from 89 adults using light sensors and sleep trackers.
Jennifer Martin, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist and professor at Florida International University, supports these findings. She explains that light impacts sleep through a pathway beginning in the eye, signaling the brain that it is daytime and time to be alert. Morning light is particularly beneficial for maintaining a stable sleep-wake cycle. Martin advises outdoor exposure early in the day and reducing bright light exposure in the evening to enhance sleep quality.
“Light impacts human sleep through a specific pathway, starting with the eye,” Martin explained to Fox News Digital.
Martin recommends consistent wake-up times to prevent feelings similar to jet lag, which can result from varying wake times by more than an hour. Limiting bright light exposure before bedtime also supports a healthy sleep routine. She suggests adults aim for at least seven hours of sleep each night and seek help from a sleep specialist for chronic sleep issues.
Although the study emphasizes the association between daytime light exposure and improved sleep, the researchers acknowledge limitations. The study showed a correlation but not a direct causation between light exposure and sleep patterns. Additionally, light exposure was measured using wrist-worn devices rather than assessing light at the eyes, and other factors like physical activity or meal timing were not evaluated.
