Diffuse midline gliomas (D.M.G.) have long posed a devastating challenge, often viewed as a terminal diagnosis for affected children and adolescents. Recently, researchers have achieved notable progress in understanding and treating these aggressive brain tumors.

Ethan White’s Story

Ethan White experienced early symptoms during drum practice at the University of Michigan, where he played as a snare drummer in the marching band. His health concerns started with losing feeling in his right hand and later experiencing difficulty walking up stairs. Diagnosed in March 2024 with D.M.G., Ethan joined those facing this daunting diagnosis.

The Challenge of D.M.G.

D.M.G. represents the deadliest pediatric cancer. Historically, children diagnosed with D.M.G. had a survival expectancy of about one year. Treatment options were limited, primarily focusing on radiation to temporarily alleviate symptoms such as weakness and double vision.

Progress in Research

Recent strides in understanding D.M.G. have led to identifying a genetic mutation at the root of many cases. Some experimental therapies targeting this mutation have shown promise in slowing the disease’s progression, allowing a few patients to live for several years. Dr. Sabine Mueller, leading the Pediatric Brain Tumor Center at the University of California, San Francisco, remarked on the positive shift in survival outcomes.

FDA Approval and Experimental Treatments

In 2025, the FDA approved the first drug specifically for D.M.G. Other treatments remain in the experimental stage, offering hope for further advancements.

Currently, Ethan White is in hospice care at home, supported full-time by his parents.
