Elsie, a 32-year-old mother and aspiring singer-songwriter, sought to revive her music career, which she had put on pause to support her family.
Each judge acknowledged her singing talent and potential, though not all agreed on her song choice. Former Spice Girls member Mel B praised Elsie’s voice, suggesting, “You’re clearly an amazing singer, but I think, for me personally, you should have done a different song.” Mel B believed Elsie’s voice could deliver more than what was showcased during the performance.
Howie Mandel’s remarks earned mixed reactions, resulting in boos from the crowd after his single “no” vote. He commented, “You look like a star, you sound like a star. But I don’t know if it was the song or the production. I want to know who you are. I have no idea who you are yet.”
In contrast, Sofía Vergara saw promise in Elsie, stating, “I do think you have it. I think it was just a wrong choice, a little bad luck today. I’m gonna say yes because I want to give you another chance.”
Simon Cowell also found potential in Elsie, but noted her performance might have suffered from over-preparation. “I think what happened today is that you over-prepped,” Cowell observed. “It’s about letting go of some of the stuff and being a little bit more raw. You have star potential.” Despite Mandel’s dissent, Mel B joined Cowell and Vergara in advancing Elsie to the next round with a “yes.”
Despite the mixed reactions from the “America’s Got Talent” panel, Elsie remains committed to moving forward. Backstage, she expressed her willingness to adapt, saying, “I’m from Mississippi. I’ll go out there and stomp and clap and sing with no music, OK?”
