Archaeologists in Italy have discovered the remains of the earliest known Christian church in the region, near a former fish market in Oderzo, situated approximately 40 miles northeast of Venice. This significant find was announced by the Archaeological Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape for the Metropolitan Area of Venice and nearby provinces.

The excavated site revealed detailed polychrome mosaic floors and human burials by the foundational walls. Known historically as Opitergium, Oderzo’s church dates back to the fourth and fifth centuries A.D., during the Late Roman period. Initial excavation began last November, linked to preparations for a residential redevelopment project.

The structure is recognized as a large rectangular church, measuring around 75 feet in width and at least 98 feet in length. It includes a central aisle flanked by two side aisles. Officials noted the foundations, measuring up to 1.2 meters thick, were constructed from brick and mortar and supported on wooden piles. This method improved stability, commonly employed in ancient construction.

In addition to architectural remnants, four burial sites containing the remains of seven individuals were found adjacent to the church. Anthropological studies are currently underway to gather more information about these individuals and the burial practices of the time.

The church’s eastern sector remains unexcavated, hinting at a larger complex than presently known. The timeline of the church’s disuse remains unclear, but evidence points to abandonment, material stripping, and partial destruction during the Middle Ages.

Experts consider this discovery exceptionally significant, representing the rise of Christianity as the dominant religion within the Roman Empire during that era. It enriches our understanding of the historical narrative of ancient Opitergium during the Late Roman and Early Medieval periods.

This discovery contributes to the string of archaeological finds in Italy showcasing the country’s rich Roman and early Christian history.
