“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin expressed her concern over feeling “unsafe” in areas with numerous American flags. She confirmed her stance during a recent appearance on the “Behind the Table” podcast with the show’s executive producer, Brian Teta.

Hostin stated, “I stand by that,” and noted that this conversation is familiar within the Black community. She recalled a personal experience visiting friends in North Carolina, where she felt uneasy after noticing a Confederate flag in the area. “I’m in the South,” she said, recalling the moment with her children and a Confederate flag in sight.

“And I scurried back to the house and I said to the hosts, ‘Do you know that there’s a Confederate flag out there? You know, it didn’t feel great.'”

During a discussion on “The View” last week, Hostin reiterated her discomfort around American flags, particularly when they are prominently displayed in certain communities. She mentioned a discussion in 2021 where she shared similar thoughts about American flags symbolizing an uncomfortable association with White supremacy for her.

Hostin emphasized she doesn’t oppose the American flag itself but is concerned with how it is sometimes used. On the podcast, she remarked that the flag has been co-opted by far-right groups, expressing her view that these groups have “weaponized” it.

She supports efforts to reclaim the American flag as a symbol of justice, freedom, and equality. Hostin clarified, “I would be very happy to be part of a take the flag back, reclaim the American flag as a symbol of what it should be.”

In 2021, Hostin discussed on “The View” how some Black Americans feel uncomfortable with American flags in their neighborhoods, defending analyst Mara Gay for her comments on this issue.
