Bryce Harper, a prominent player for the Philadelphia Phillies, recently found himself embroiled in a sports betting controversy. The issue centers around a Cameo video Harper recorded in November 2024 for a gambler named Terry Thompson. Harper intended for the video to be a holiday greeting, but it became entangled in a lawsuit involving the sportsbook FanDuel. Thompson had wagered $18.5 million and lost over $1.5 million on the platform.

Thompson sued FanDuel, drawing Harper into the legal battle. The controversy intensified after a video surfaced of Harper playing at American Family Field in Wisconsin. In response to the situation, Harper used Instagram Stories to distance himself from FanDuel, stating he joined Cameo to connect with fans through personalized messages. “What happened here went beyond anything I knew about or approved,” he explained.

Harper mentioned he received a request that seemed personal, wishing “Terry” a happy Thanksgiving. FanDuel added its logo to the video, using it as a promotional tool. Harper emphasized he did not consent to this usage and that FanDuel had no right to do so.

The issue with Harper’s statement is that the script he followed explicitly mentioned a FanDuel host, which complicates his claim of being unaware. During the recording, Harper referred to “your host Bryttanni from FanDuel.” This makes claiming ignorance challenging when he verbally acknowledged FanDuel.

Harper insisted he acted “in good faith.” However, his decision to mention a sportsbook’s name without further inquiry appears questionable. Whether Major League Baseball will investigate remains uncertain, but the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board is examining FanDuel’s use of celebrity messages targeting high-roller VIP bettors.

Although Harper did not gamble on baseball, the connection to a betting promotion raises concerns. While FanDuel, the Phillies, and Harper’s representative have been contacted for comments, the situation reflects poorly on Harper. At worst, he accepted a paid task without thorough consideration, backtracking only after the gambling addiction issue came to light.
