An armed individual was arrested on Monday after driving to a security barricade outside the U.S. Capitol. This incident led to a police investigation and a temporary closure of part of the Capitol grounds.
U.S. Capitol Police reported the arrest occurred at the North Barricade when officers discovered the suspect possessed a firearm. The possession of firearms is prohibited on Capitol Grounds. Authorities closed the area to process the scene and gather information.
“Our investigators are working to learn more about the suspect and why he drove to the U.S. Capitol,” Capitol Police stated.
As of now, the suspect’s identity and potential charges remain undisclosed.
Police officers stayed at the scene throughout Monday afternoon. Officers removed items from a Ford Bronco parked at the barricade. From afar, these items appeared to include water bottles and other personal belongings.
A dog found in the vehicle was safely evacuated by the SPCA.
The North Barricade stayed closed during the ongoing investigation.
