FIFA unexpectedly suspended a one-match ban for U.S. men’s national team forward Folarin Balogun on Sunday. This decision allows the star striker to participate in Monday’s World Cup knockout match against Belgium, drawing quick praise from President Donald Trump.
The reversal came after Balogun received a straight red card during the United States’ recent 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Normally, a direct dismissal incurs an automatic one-match ban under FIFA regulations, and officials had insisted the decision was non-appealable.
However, FIFA released a statement employing a probationary loophole to defer the penalty, stating, “In line with article 27 of the FIFA disciplinary code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year. If Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature during the probationary period, the suspension will be revoked and the sanction enforced along with any additional sanction.”
President Trump quickly reacted, expressing gratitude on Truth Social: “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right.” Newsweek contacted FIFA and the White House for further comments.
Balogun’s Availability Is a Massive Boost
This decision greatly benefits the U.S. men’s national team as Balogun has been a pivotal player throughout the tournament. The 25-year-old striker has started almost every match and contributed to goals in each World Cup game. He scored twice in the opening match against Paraguay and against Bosnia before his dismissal.
Without Balogun, head coach Mauricio Pochettino would have had to choose between Ricardo Pepi, Haji Wright or a reshuffled attack centered on Christian Pulisic. Instead, the U.S. will have one of its best attackers available.
“Obviously for us it gives us a boost,” Pulisic said after hearing the news. Defender Chris Richards shared that players heard reports while traveling to training but were initially unsure of the validity.
“We weren’t quite sure if it was true or not,” Richards commented. Balogun’s response was reportedly a simple, “Lit.”
Why Was Balogun Sent Off?
The controversy started during the match against Bosnia when Balogun pursued a loose ball near the sideline and made contact with defender Tarik Muharemovic. Initially, referee Raphael Claus allowed play to continue without showing a red card. Upon video review, Claus examined the incident on the monitor and decided that Balogun committed serious foul play, leading to his dismissal.
The decision attracted criticism. “For me? Never a red card,” Pochettino said post-match, believing it was accidental. Pulisic echoed this sentiment, describing the punishment as harsh and unfortunate for Balogun missing an important match.
FIFA’s decision took many by surprise, as expectations were high that Balogun would miss the match against Belgium. The move added to significant discussion in sports circles.
Notably, Balogun is not the only player to receive such leniency. Similar cases include Argentine defender Nicolás Otamendi and Ecuador midfielder Moisés Caicedo, as well as Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who all had bans deferred.
Speculation and Reactions
Trump’s celebration over the decision has fueled speculation about possible political influence. After his public acknowledgment of FIFA, some social media users speculated if political pressure affected FIFA’s ruling.
Despite this, no evidence suggests that President Trump, the White House, or U.S. officials influenced FIFA’s decision. Neither FIFA nor U.S. Soccer has indicated political involvement in their decision-making process. Nevertheless, Trump’s remarks brought broader attention beyond soccer.

With Balogun cleared to participate, attention turns to the field as the U.S. prepares to face Belgium on Monday night in Seattle, with the match determining a spot in the World Cup quarterfinals.
