Despite tension with the Trump administration over its immigration policies, the U.S.-born pope embraced his roots by visiting the U.S. ambassador to the Holy See, Brian Burch. The meeting was unusual for popes but marked the Fourth of July spirit. The ambassador gifted Leo a commemorative baseball, apple pie, and a U.S. World Cup jersey, confirming Leo’s support for the team. Their discussions touched on American efforts for peace and religious freedom.
A Symbolic Visit
Lampedusa, a small island closer to Africa than to Italy, is a major entry point for migrants traveling from Libya or Tunisia. Human traffickers commonly smuggle these migrants. Leo met with some at the port and walked onto the rocky jetty, blessimg a plaque dedicated to Pope Francis. He celebrated a Mass reminding everyone of Christians’ duty to protect the vulnerable, especially migrants.
Leo’s message carried implications for both the U.S. and Europe, emphasizing the historical contribution of immigrants in the U.S. and urging compassion and generosity.

Tareke Brhane, president of the Oct. 3 Committee, stressed the significance of Leo’s visit. Founded by shipwreck victims’ relatives, the committee advocates for migrant rights and recognition. Leo’s visit served as a powerful reminder of the shared responsibility to support migrants and remember those who have perished trying to reach safety.
