CLEVELAND — Miguel Vargas faced challenging times in 2024. “At the moment, I was processing,” Vargas explained. “I just wanted joy and happiness on the field, but I couldn’t find it.” Now, the third baseman is an All-Star.
Vargas credits his teammates for their support. “These guys have helped me,” he said. “They carried me to this point, and I’m grateful to be part of this group.” Vargas hit a solo home run for the White Sox against the Guardians on June 23, 2026, at Rate Field.
Vargas will represent the Chicago White Sox on the American League roster at the All-Star Game in Philadelphia on July 14. The rosters were announced Saturday evening. “This means a lot,” Vargas stated. “I worked hard and it’s rewarding to see the payoff. While more of our guys deserve All-Star recognition, I’m glad to represent us all.”
He is the first Sox third baseman to make the All-Star team since Joe Crede in 2008, joining past players like Robin Ventura (1992) and Bill Melton (1971). Sox manager Will Venable expressed his support: “You aren’t supposed to have favorites, but I’m a big fan of Vargy. His contribution to the team goes beyond his performance, making him an ideal representative.”
Entering Saturday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians, Vargas posted a .248/.359/.495 slash line with 20 home runs and 55 RBIs in 86 games. His 3.2 fWAR ranked 18th in MLB and 13th among position players.
“Looking back, I had many tough moments,” Vargas reflected. “I’ve come a long way with the help of my teammates and coaches. I’m proud to represent the White Sox.”
After joining the Sox in a trade from the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 29, 2024, Vargas hit .104 in 42 games. He improved last year, hitting .234 with 16 home runs and 60 RBIs in 138 games. Currently, he leads major-league third basemen in runs (58) and walks (51), is tied for RBIs, second in home runs, and third in weighted runs created plus (138).
Venable acknowledged Vargas’ improvement: “We witnessed some of his potential in 2025, but it was inconsistent. He worked hard on his body and swing in the offseason, increasing his bat speed. Now, his consistent performance is expected daily.”
Venable lamented the lack of more Sox players on the AL roster: “Honestly, I’m upset. We have many deserving candidates. Our team receives contributions from everyone; it’s part of our strength. Still, I hope others will join as replacements.”
Venable described Vargas as “a special guy,” highlighting his competitive nature and dedication. This combination led Vargas to his first All-Star selection.
“I appreciate everyone — teammates, the front office, coaching staff, and fans in Chicago. Their support is crucial, and this moment is significant for my family as well,” Vargas said. “I want to share this triumph with them.”
