British newspapers highlighted the plans, referring to it as ‘England’s big all-nighter’ with terms like ‘Mextra time’ and a ‘Mexican rave.’
While the decision pleases fans, concerns were raised by police chiefs about alcohol-related incidents. The National Police Chiefs’ Council warned about potential increases in violence and domestic abuse linked to extended drinking. They expressed frustration with the government’s timing, stating the World Cup bracket has been long known, implying late planning affects policing schedules.
Under normal circumstances, licensing laws require pubs to cease serving alcohol by 11 p.m. However, for England and Scotland matches, special allowances have permitted pubs to operate until 2 a.m. England’s upcoming overnight match, which might stretch past 4 a.m., poses further logistical challenges.
Starmer ruled out closing schools on Monday, despite calls from England’s head coach, Thomas Tuchel, for parents to excuse their children to watch the game. Starmer’s spokesperson stated that while the game should be enjoyed, attending school remains a priority.
The police were commended for their adaptability in response to the revised licensing rules, implemented swiftly after England’s recent win. Additionally, employers anticipate a rise in sick leave or absence requests on Monday as employees recover from the festivities.
Government minister Baroness Smith encouraged enthusiasm as England faces Mexico, suggesting everyone should go to work on Monday to celebrate the anticipated victory. Meanwhile, Starmer plans his exit after two challenging years, passing leadership to Andy Burnham later this month. Burnham, like Starmer, is a strong soccer enthusiast, having supported England at the Euro 2024 final; he might continue this tradition if England reaches the World Cup final, occurring on July 19, shortly after he assumes leadership.
Historically, English soccer fans have been notorious for hooliganism, often causing disturbances abroad. Now, through stricter law enforcement and rising costs, such behavior has decreased.
