Christian Pulisic’s experience in the 2026 FIFA World Cup has not gone as planned. Initially suffering a calf injury during training, he worsened it in the United States men’s national team (USMNT) match against Paraguay on June 12. This injury caused him to miss the game against Australia on June 19. Although Pulisic rejoined the team for the next two games, his performance did not reach its usual standard.
His involvement in the US’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 came under scrutiny. Gregg Berhalter, former USMNT head coach and now with the Chicago Fire, commented that tactical decisions might be the issue. On the “Coaches Corner” show, he expressed that the team needs to better position Pulisic to exploit his talents effectively. Berhalter highlighted the need for Pulisic to receive the ball in optimal positions.
Pulisic faced doubts entering the World Cup since he had not scored for AC Milan or the USMNT in early 2026. Despite pressure, he remains focused. He mentioned in an interview with Newsweek on June 4 that maintaining routine and support from friends and family keeps him grounded, reducing stress from overthinking games.
The USMNT needs Pulisic to perform at his best against Belgium in Seattle on July 6, in the Round of 16. The team faces an added challenge as Folarin Balogun, a star striker, is suspended after receiving a red card against Bosnia. A victory against Belgium would lead the USMNT to their first World Cup quarterfinals since 2002. Advancing further would be historic, as they have not gone past the quarterfinals since 1930. The “Captain America” moniker may be unasked for, but Pulisic has a critical role to play for his team.
