Native American Artist Visits Orland Park Library
Negwes White, a Chicago-based artist, will present his exhibit Here & Now: An Urban Native Voice at the Orland Park Public Library on July 11 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. White, who has Ojibwe, Guachuchil, and Diné heritage, will share Native American stories and perform a traditional Plains Indian grass dance. He will also discuss his creative process and answer questions. The exhibit will be on display throughout July on the library’s second floor. Oak Lawn Artists Compete in Reflections Contest
Students from Oak Lawn Community High School showcased their talents in the Illinois PTA Reflections program, a well-known arts initiative. The program features various forms of art, including film, literature, music, visual arts, photography, and dance. From 37 submissions, 15 students advanced to the state level. Among them were Addison Clark, Emily Prado, and Peyton Marshall, who moved on to regional competitions. The program highlighted the creativity of young artists in the community.
Tinley Park-Frankfort Rotary Club Awards Scholarships
The Tinley Park-Frankfort Rotary Club awarded $1,000 scholarships to Gavin Hemminger, Elizabeth Ardagh, and Caden Wolfe. Ardagh, from Lincoln-Way East High School, will attend the University of Notre Dame to study biological sciences and neuroscience. Wolfe, from Andrew High School, plans to study special education at DePaul University. Hemminger, from Tinley Park High School, will study biology at Georgia Institute of Technology. Underground Railroad History Picnic Set
The Crete Historical Society and the Midwest Underground Railroad Network will hold a picnic from noon to 2 p.m. on July 11 at Schubert Woods Pavilion. The event will provide families with an opportunity to learn about the Underground Railroad’s history in the region. Professor Larry McClellan will guide a hike at 11 a.m. to the McCoy Homestead site. A presentation will follow, discussing local Underground Railroad activities. Country Fest Comes to Tinley Park
Tinley Park Country Fest will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States from July 3 to 5 at the Metra station. The festival will feature performances by Nashville musicians and local bands. Attendees can enjoy line dancing lessons, food vendors, craft stalls, and a magic show.
