Michael Weatherly will return to his role as Tony DiNozzo in ‘NCIS’ for its 24th season, ten years after leaving the series. CBS announced on July 1 that Weatherly, 57, would rejoin the popular procedural. The network’s press release describes his return as a ‘season-long arc’ that will reunite him with the ‘NCIS’ team.
On the official Instagram account of ‘NCIS,’ Weatherly expressed his excitement, stating, ‘I’ll see you in the fall.’ The post’s caption added, ‘We’ve missed this one… welcome back, old friend!’
Weatherly previously appeared in the season 21 episode “The Stories We Leave Behind.” This episode honored the departure of David McCallum’s character, Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, following McCallum’s death in September 2023. Weatherly also appeared in the canceled spinoff, “NCIS: Tony & Ziva,” alongside Cote de Pablo.
Fans have expressed their excitement on social media. Comments include hopes that de Pablo will return alongside Weatherly, with fans expressing their disappointment over the cancellation of “NCIS: Tony & Ziva.” One fan wrote, ‘WHAT?!?!? You better be bringing @cotedepablo with you! 😍’ and another added, ‘It better be both Tony and Ziva!’
Before the cancellation of the spinoff, Weatherly and de Pablo conveyed their gratitude for revisiting their characters. They issued a joint statement acknowledging their appreciation for the cast, crew, and fans who supported “NCIS: Tony & Ziva.”
Sean Murray, Wilmer Valderrama, Brian Dietzen, Diona Reasonover, Katrina Law, and Gary Cole will join Weatherly in the upcoming season. ‘NCIS’ premieres Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET this fall on CBS and Paramount+.
