On Sunday, Argentine soccer player Lucas Trejo tragically learned that his wife and two children died following powerful earthquakes in Venezuela. Trejo, a player for Club Sport Maritimo La Guaira, endured days of searching before rescuers located the bodies of his family in the rubble, as reported by CNN.
The club expressed profound sorrow over the loss in a post on Instagram, coupled with a picture of the family. “Peace to their souls and comfort for Lucas and all his loved ones,” the club conveyed in a message on social media.
The Earthquakes’ Impact
The twin quakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5, struck on Wednesday evening while Trejo was in Caracas for a training camp. He hurried back to La Guaira, the most severely affected area, to face the destruction of his home, as explained by his brother-in-law Ricardo Ardiles to CNN Español. According to Ardiles, nothing recognizable remained of the building.
The disaster’s impact stretched beyond Trejo’s family. Venezuelan authorities reported nearly 1,500 fatalities with tens of thousands still missing. Rescue efforts continue with hope diminishing as time passes.
Rescue Efforts Amidst Tragedy
During the weekend, a U.S. search and rescue team achieved a miraculous save by extracting a mother and her 9-month-old baby from a collapsed building. A shared video showed neighbors celebrating as the mother was rescued. The baby, wrapped in blue fabric, was retrieved amid emotional cries.
Despite governmental claims of comprehensive rescue operations, locals claimed to see limited state teams in impacted areas. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez assured a committed government response. Meanwhile, around 200 individuals have been rescued, yet a reported 51,000 remain missing according to online records.
In La Guaira, resident Diana Sandrano remains determined in her search for her missing brother. “He deserves to live and have a future,” Sandrano expressed after a relentless day of searching.
