Extensive Search Underway for Missing U.S. Marine off Southern California Coast

Multiple agencies are conducting an extensive search for a U.S. Marine who went missing during a nighttime training exercise from the USS Anchorage, an amphibious transport dock, off the coast of Southern California. The search, which covers approximately 2,400 square miles, involves military ships and aircraft from the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Air Force. The authorities have not released the Marine’s identity, withholding the name until the family is notified.

The recovery efforts began after two full days of search and rescue operations. This marks the second time in six weeks that the U.S. military has initiated a major search for missing personnel, following fatal training accidents in Morocco involving soldiers. The Navy transitioned the operation from search and rescue to recovery after nearly 48 hours of extensive searching.

The Marine was part of a training operation involving the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group. The circumstances surrounding the disappearance remain undisclosed, reflecting cautious communication as the investigation and searches continue.

The Associated Press reported a related incident in Morocco, where the remains of two Army soldiers were recovered in May following their disappearance during off-duty periods from military exercises. This previous event underscores the challenges faced by military personnel during training operations.

In a statement, the Navy expressed condolences, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all who are affected during this difficult time.” Search efforts highlight the complexities and risks associated with military operations and training exercises.
