Hillary Clinton Criticizes Biden’s Re-election Bid and the Electoral College

Hillary Clinton recently described President Joe Biden’s decision to seek re-election in 2024 as a ‘terrible mistake’. In an interview, she suggested that Biden should have handed over leadership to a new candidate. This comment was met with surprise given her past endorsements of Biden. On ‘Fox & Friends’, hosts discussed the timing and implications of Clinton’s remarks, pointing out a lack of varied opinions within the Democratic Party on significant political strategies.

Clinton continues to voice her displeasure with the Electoral College, a system she blames for her 2016 presidential loss. In a trailer for the Netflix docuseries ‘The American Experiment’, Clinton calls the Electoral College an ‘abomination’. This five-part series, featuring politicians and historians like Kamala Harris, Mike Pence, and Al Gore, explores the history and evolution of American democracy. Critics argue that while Clinton won the popular vote in 2016, the Electoral College swayed in Donald Trump’s favor, leading to his presidency.

The Electoral College, established in 1787, has faced criticism from some groups, especially after Clinton’s defeat. Clinton’s 2017 memoir ‘What Happened’ and subsequent interviews highlight her stance against the Electoral College. She believes it is an outdated system, unsuited to modern democracy where ‘one person, one vote’ should determine winners. Before Trump’s 2024 victory over Kamala Harris, Clinton again voiced concerns, noting the difficulty posed by the Electoral College.

During the Netflix series, Rep. Zoe Lofgren reflects on the founding fathers’ skepticism about the Electoral College, describing it as defective. Lofgren emphasizes that the system sometimes allows a minority to override the majority’s will.

Director Brian Knappenberger shared insights about Clinton’s interview for the series, acknowledging how it revisits a challenging period in her life. Clinton’s loss in the 2016 election remains significant since she won the popular vote by a large margin while losing the electoral vote.
