Four months ago, Alberto Carvalho was settling into his role as Superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Having secured a new four-year contract, Carvalho was recognized for his leadership during a post-pandemic shift in the nation’s second-largest school district. The situation changed dramatically when the FBI raided his home and office, leading to his placement on paid leave. Late Sunday night, Carvalho announced his resignation to steer the district’s focus back to students and their education.
In his resignation letter, Carvalho emphasized the need to maintain the district’s emphasis on learning without any distractions. The FBI’s investigation, initiated in February, examined Carvalho’s connection with a contractor involved in a failed artificial intelligence chatbot project. This venture was intended to support educational efforts but unraveled amidst fraud charges against the company’s founder, leading to its collapse and a loss of approximately $3 million.
Accomplishments and Challenges
Carvalho took charge of LAUSD in February 2022 during a difficult period marked by lagging student achievement, rising absenteeism, and dwindling enrollment. His tenure saw the district achieve notable academic improvements. California Governor Gavin Newsom lauded Carvalho in his State of the State address for surpassing pre-pandemic educational performance, especially among low-income and minority students.
His leadership navigated significant hurdles, including school closures during major fires that displaced students and staff, as well as addressing fears within the district’s predominantly Latino community about immigration raids on campuses.
Investigations and Resignations
The FBI’s February 25 raids targeted multiple locations, including Carvalho’s residence and that of educational consultant Debra Kerr. Both were investigated, but neither faced charges. The raids coincided with the failed AI chatbot venture, which Carvalho introduced with AllHere, a company now defunct due to financial and legal issues.
The district’s Board of Education placed Carvalho on leave shortly after, appointing Andres Chait as acting superintendent. Chait managed to avert a potential strike by union groups that could have severely disrupted district functions.
Path Forward for LAUSD
Amid the upheaval, LAUSD’s board has expressed its commitment to stability post-Carvalho. They have decided Chait will continue as acting superintendent until a permanent replacement is identified. This decision comes as the district navigates budget challenges and the broader educational landscape changes.
Carvalho’s tenure, though marred by controversy, left an indelible mark on LAUSD’s educational progress. His departure signifies a pivotal transition period, as the district adjusts to new leadership and ongoing investigations.
